In Season Lent
We are now into the liturgical season of Lent. It is represented with the color violet, which symbolizes mourning and penance. The alter is left bare at this time, and the alleluia is not said in either prayer or song.
Lent lasts for 40 weekdays in remembrance of the 40 days and nights that Christ spent fasting in the desert tempted by Satan.
Apples are in season right now here in Virginia. The most recognized apples are the Granny Smith, which are perfect for making cakes, pastries and pies. The Red and Golden Delicious are perfect to eat raw. On a cheese plate, the Gala and Macintosh would be wonderful.

My most viewed recipe on the blog is my Apple Pie Moonshine. It is not really moonshine, I just use grain alcohol, it may not be available in your area. If that is the case, you can use vodka instead. Just be careful it can pack a powerful punch!
I am not very good at making pie crusts to be honest my go to for many years has been Pillsbury. But this Apple Pie recipe is to die for. It is from Barefoot Contessa and it is oh so good!
I think a apple crisp is much easier to make than apple pie. Cooking it in a slow cooker makes everything easier. It is so very good with ice cream melting over the top.
